Mt Albert Grammar old boy Sean Fletcher, should be gearing up for a representative rugby match for the North Harbour under-20 side this weekend.
Instead, the 19-year-old Papakura man is nursing a badly injured mouth, with one smashed tooth and three others chipped, after he was hit by a rock thrown by a spectator at a semi-final rugby game between St Peter's College and Mt Albert Grammar on Saturday.
Mr Fletcher's father, Keith Fletcher said his son had turned his head to talk to someone a moment before a rock, which a witness said was half the size of a cricket ball, hit him in the face.
"He was just standing there watching the haka," he said.
"That's when the rock hit him in the lip. If he hadn't of turned his head, it would have hit him in the back of the head. It's getting to be that a Saturday rugby game is unsafe to go to now. "
Mr Fletcher said his son had five stitches in his lip and ongoing dental work to be completed.
He was struggling to find $1200 to pay for the repairs to his son's teeth because not all of that would be covered by ACC.
"Just because of one cowardly act, through no fault of his own."
Mr Fletcher said his son was traumatised by the incident and he hoped the culprit was caught.
"I'd like this person to be responsible for his actions and the cost to us."
