Specialist police officers interview sexual assault victim

The woman who was sexually assaulted in her Upper Hutt home has been interviewed by specialist police officers in the hope of gleaning more details about her attacker.

The brazen daylight attack on the 26-year-old happened shortly before 3pm on Wednesday at her Elderslea property.

Wellington police spokesman Nick Bohm said police were waiting for results of a "specialist forensic interview" with the woman.

"We're hoping that will provide some more details about the attacker."

Police would release any new information to the public in an effort to find the attacker.

A search of the woman's property uncovered some items of interest that had been sent away for forensic testing, Mr Bohm said.

Senior Sergeant Carolyn McKenzie of Hutt Valley police earlier said afternoon home invasions were not very common.

"Obviously attacks of this nature are taken extremely seriously."

Police had not yet identified a suspect, but the offender was not thought to be known to the woman.

Anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously in the McLeod St area between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday was urged to contact Upper Hutt police on (04) 527 2300.
