Parliament's Legislative Council Chamber was an apt venue for Speaker Lockwood Smith's wedding yesterday.
Smith married Alexandra Lang in front of Prime Minister John Key and other dignitaries.
The wedding had only one hiccup, when a young ring-bearer needed assistance after apparently passing out.
Proceedings were otherwise smooth, and Smith even sang to his bride before placing the ring on her finger.
The couple met when they were students at Massey University in Palmerston North in 1970. Lang has four adult children from a previous marriage.
She works as a counsellor at a high school near Smith's farm in Northland.
It is 60-year-old Smith's first marriage.
