Guy Fawkes Night is fast approaching and the SPCA hopes it will be the last for fireworks sales to the public.
National chief executive Robyn McDonald said a ban was one of the first issues to be discussed with the new Government and the society would seek help from the Fire Service and other agencies to have the sale of fireworks banned other than for licensed public displays.
Wairarapa SPCA president Val Ball said Guy Fawkes meant terror for domestic and farm animals.
"Last year I saw crackers thrown at ducks, and another time I've seen a horse, spooked by a cracker, spiked on a fence."
Masterton Mayor Bob Francis said to have the town a fireworks-free zone was not practical.
He said he had a lot of sympathy for the SPCA's stance, but retailers also had rights within the law.
Masterton fire safety officer Henry Stechman said the Fire Service would support a move by the town and SPCA to encourage public fireworks displays that were monitored and well away from any pets.
"We're not killjoys and we like people to have a good time."
