One-year-old Ambrose is a confident and friendly ginger cat who SPCA staff say is a real Kiwi bloke.
Feline attendant Jenna Fowler calls Ambrose a "man's man" - the perfect companion for someone who likes spending time in the garage or in the garden.
"We call him a dog cat. He would be great for someone who likes dogs but can't have one," said Mrs Fowler.
However, the tomcat can be a little feisty at play, so he would not be suited to a family with young children or elderly people.
He also tends to be dominating and, like a dog, needs an owner who is prepared to lay down the law.
Mrs Fowler says Ambrose is full of energy and loves to live life to the full but also enjoys a cuddle. "He is a man of few words but also very friendly."
