Three car fires in the Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie early yesterday could be linked to similar incidents last week, police say.
Acting Detective Sergeant Sam Mercer there were four suspicious fires in Kilbirnie between midnight and 3am yesterday, three of which were car arsons.
"The first fire was started in a skip bin behind Farmers on Bay Road, around 12.20am," Mr Mercer said.
"Five people were then reported acting suspiciously in Endeavour Street. A short time later, a silver Mazda convertible was set alight in the street and was completely gutted by fire."
That was followed by a silver Hyundai station wagon being set alight in Rodrigo Road about 1.30am, and a blue Mazda Capella station wagon in Duncan Terrace about 2am.
