The King and Queen of Spain visited the University of Auckland yesterday to meet the new professor of Spanish, Dr Jose Colmeiro, whose academic position is sponsored by the royal family.
King Juan Carlos, a sailing enthusiast, also examined the university's yachting technology and saw an exhibit on the late Sir Peter Blake at the National Maritime Museum.
Today, elaborate military displays will welcome the King and Queen Sofia as they visit Wellington on the fourth day of their New Zealand tour.
They will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial.
Later this morning they will receive a state welcome at Parliament which will feature a 100-person guard of honour, followed by a 21-gun salute from Pt Jerningham. The King and Queen will also preside at the official opening of the Spanish Embassy.
The five-day trip is the royal couple's first visit to New Zealand in 21 years.
