KEY POINTS:
As the sun rose on the America Cup's race course in Valencia, the Last Post could be heard breaking the silence.
It was an integral part of Emirates Team New Zealand's dawn service at their base and attended by team members and their families.
Eight-year-old Kate Stewart, daughter of logistics manager Ian Stewart, laid a wreath at the bottom of the team's flagpole.
Then the notes of the Last Post sounded while the team's huge New Zealand flag was raised.
The national anthem followed and the service ended with a prayer from business manager Ross Blackman.
"There's always emotion," he said. "I remember going as a kid with my father and to be doing it here in Spain is quite unique."
The idea to hold the service came from Doug Reid, who also works in the business unit.
"Doug is the oldest member on the team and has the longest memory and, as soon as he reminded us all, we realised it was the right and good thing to do," Blackman said.
"There was a fantastic turnout, which was really neat. There were quite a few crew off our support boats which was really nice."
The team also wore poppies.
