More than 30 Southland Times employees are striking today in protest of Fairfax Media's freeze on wages.
The journalists, printers and sales staff join thousands of other low-paid public workers in a nationwide day of strike action.
The Southland Times strike involves a picket at the Invercargill city centre at Wachner Place, Dee Street from 12.30-1.30pm.
EPMU organiser Trevor Hobbs says the pay freeze is unjustified.
"The union has been in negotiations with Fairfax for months, but the company has refused from the outset to lift its pay freeze," he said.
"Our members are rightly angry with Fairfax's refusal to pay a cost of living increase, particularly as the company had no trouble funding a $5 million golden handshake for departing CEO David Kirk."
The EPMU is New Zealand's largest private-sector union, representing 45,000 workers across eleven industries.
