A cold southerly forecast for this weekend could bring snow showers to Christchurch, bringing further misery for the quake-devastated city.
The southerly outbreak was expected to move up the east of the South Island on Sunday bringing strong winds and snow, including possible falls in Christchurch, WeatherWatch.co.nz analyst Richard Green said.
"It's difficult to ascertain how many snow showers could fall to sea level but the ingredients appear to be coming together at this point and freezing temperatures were looking likely.
"If snow does take place, it'll be Christchurch's first fall in three years,'' Mr Green said.
Temperatures were expected to stay below 5-6degC on Monday in Christchurch and the front could also bring snow to parts of the North Island.
