High winds, driving rain and lightning hampered efforts to reconnect the 1500 Southland and Otago homes still without power yesterday.
Powernet operations manager Gary Pritchard said the damage to the network had been extensive and additional staff and resources were being brought into the region.
Yesterday, wind gusts of 200km/h were recorded at the Homer Tunnel, near Milford.
