KEY POINTS:
Severe winds are forecast for the lower South Island with a southerly front working its way up the country.
It is expected to hit the capital during tomorrow night's All Blacks test match against Ireland.
MetService warns it will be a rough afternoon for Southland, Otago and Canterbury.
Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt says the winds are expected to reach 130km/hr.
He says that is strong enough to case damage power lines, lift roofs and make driving dangerous for large trucks and motorcycles.
Mr McDavitt says Stewart Island is already taking a battering.
