The sparkling Waitemata harbour is one of the things which makes Auckland a truly unique city, and the New Zealand Maritime Museum honours and preserves our nautical heritage. Head down to the waterfront and take part yourself at 12pm, where the cannons are fired each day at 12pm, in keeping with sailors timekeeping tradition. If you're lucky, you might even spot a whale or two, they're known to hang out in the harbour.
