The Dunedin District Court has heard Sophie Elliott died after being stabbed 216 times.
Ms Elliot's former boyfriend and Otago University economic tutor Clayton Weatherston, 32, is charged with murdering the 22-year-old in Dunedin in January.
Details of where the 22-year-old was stabbed and the extent of her injuries have been suppressed.
Weatherston's depositions hearing began this morning, with Ms Elliott's mother Lesley Elliott taking the stand.
The Crown will call a total of 17 witnesses during the hearing, 12 of whom will take the stand.
