KEY POINTS:
A teenager is alleged to have stabbed his father four times with a 20cm carving knife last night after a two-day drinking binge that ended with an argument over a stereo.
Police found the 18-year-old passed out in a park near their Otara home.
He may face a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Sergeant Steve Brewer of the Counties-Manukau crime squad told the Herald St John Ambulance staff took the injured father, in his 30s, to Middlemore Hospital.
He was in a serious condition with a punctured lung and wounds to an armpit, his back and chest.
Doctors said his level of intoxication was affecting his prospects.
Mr Brewer said the family had been drinking in the backyard, days after an associate's funeral.
"The final trigger was a dispute over the stereo. We think it was an argument over the stereo volume or choice of music."
