'Some risk' when travelling to Tunisia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not upgraded its risk rating for New Zealanders in Tunisia after a terrorist attack near Sousse.

Armed with a rifle and grenades, a gunman killed at least 39 people at a popular beach resort in Port El Kanataoui on June 26.

At least 15 victims were from Britain - the worst loss of life in a terror incident since the 2005 London bombings.

Another 39 were injured in the attack which was claimed by Isis, Islamic State, which controls large parts of Iraq and Syria.

An MFAT spokesperson said the ministry had updated its travel advisory in light of the attack but there were no changes in the analysed level of risk to travel there.

The "significant threat" of terrorism in Tunisia meant there was still "some risk" for security, MFAT said.

A terrorist attack on March 18 saw 21 tourists killed at the Bardo Museum in the centre of Tunis.

Further attacks could not be ruled out, particularly in large cities and popular tourist destinations, MFAT warned on its website.

Several other terrorist attacks - including three in 2014 which saw a collective 18 soldiers killed - meant New Zealanders should exercise a high level of security awareness at all times, it said.

MFAT did not respond to questions about how many New Zealanders were currently in Tunisia.
