Masterton's Ben Campbell is one of the favourites for the South Island amateur strokplay championships which got underway in Dunedin today.
Campbell showed he was close to peak form after finishing best of the Kiwi congtingent competing in the prestigious Lake Macquarie International in Australia last month.
He finished in a share of ninth place with a four-under par score of 282 at the coastal Belmont Golf Club near Newcastle.
He scored par or better in all four rounds, with scores of 71, 70, 72 and 71, and was eight strokes better than the next best New Zealander, Sean Riordan of Takaka.
Defending champion Peter Spearman-Burn, the 2009 amateur golfer of the year, will provide stern opposition for Campbell at the undulating and scenic St Clair course, as will national representatives Ryan Fox of Auckland - son of All Black great Grant Fox - and Andrew Stewart of Tauranga.
