Wairarapa made a stunning start to their participation in the national under-15 girls premier hockey tournament at North Harbour on Monday, winning both their matches and scoring 18 goals in the process.
Their opening pool game was against Counties-Manukau and it was all one-way traffic with Wairarapa winning 12-0. Brigette Mossman scored four of their goals, Sarah Marfell three, Hannah Lang two and Petra Hall, Emma Smith and Latesha Smith one apiece.
Second up, Wairarapa met Bay of Plenty and, while the opposition was sterner on this occasion, they still came away with a decisive 6-2 victory. Petra Hall managed a hat-trick with other scorers being Kelsey Linton, Sarah Marfell and Latesha Smith.
Wairarapa are in a pool of five teams and they finished the first day on the top of the table with six points. Northland and Canterbury had three and Bay of Plenty and Counties-Manukau had none.
There was an excellent start too from Wairarapa at the national under-15 boys premier tournament in Whangarei. They met a strong Hawke's Bay side but Zac Caldwell's two goals marked a 2-1 victory. Manawatu and Counties-Manukau are also in the same pool as Wairarapa.
