Women choked back tears while men stood solemn-faced as slain security guard Charanpreet Singh Dhaliwal was farewelled at a service last night.
About 100 people from the Sikh community gathered at Gurudwara Sikh Temple in Otahuhu to pay tribute to the 22-year-old.
Many dropped their heads into clasped hands as his coffin, which bore three photos, was taken out of the hearse and into the group of mourners.
Mr Dhaliwal was remembered as a "kind soul" who came to New Zealand for a better future and education.
A teacher at NZSE, where Mr Dhaliwal studied business, said the school was saddened by his death and that he had to "go away like this".
