They might have managed just the one victory but Wairarapa still beat two teams home in the zone two qualifying round of cricket's Hawke Cup competition.
Helped by their outright win over Horowhenua-Kapiti, Wairarapa finished with 13 points, four more than Wanganui and Horowhenua-Kapiti who tailed the field home. Manawatu earned a Hawke Cup challenge by topping the table with 41 points, followed by Hawke's Bay (35) and Taranaki (25).
On a net runs per wicket calculation, Wairarapa came off worse with a score of -22.87. Here, too, Manawatu were best with +25.77, followed by Taranaki +12.96, Hawke's Bay +6.76, Wanganui -11.07 and Horowhenua-Kapiti -13.79.
The final round of zone two games were played last weekend and results were: Wairarapa 195 and 94 lost outright to Manawatu 343-2 declared. Manawatu 10 points, Wairarapa 0. Taranaki 259 lost on the first innings to Hawke's Bay 272-8 declared. Hawke's Bay 7 points, Taranaki 1. Horowhenua Kapiti 504 beat Wanganui 310 and 100-3 on the first innings. Horowhenua-Kapiti 7 points, Wanganui 1.
