The body of the Kiwi soldier killed in Afghanistan landed at Ohakea air base this afternoon and has been passed into the care of the army and his family ahead of his funeral.
The Air Force Hercules touched down just after 4pm and a haka was performed as Lieutenant Tim O'Donnell's body was placed into a hearse.
About 200 people, including family, friends and officials attended the short service, including Prime Minister John Key and Defence Minister Wayne Mapp.
Mr Key said it was a "tough day" for the army and the O'Donnell family.
"As Prime Minister I can't think of anything worse than being forced to receive a soldier home in a coffin," he said.
Lieutenant O'Donnell will be buried in Linton with full military honours on Wednesday, with a 100-man guard.
A service will also be held in Burnham, where he was based.
