KEY POINTS:
One soldier has received lacerations after being stabbed at an Army training camp in the South Island this morning.
Sergeant Mike van der Heyden said a weapon was used in the assault but he could not say what kind. Army spokeswoman Jane Mortlock confirmed the injured soldier had received stab wounds.
Mr van der Heyden said the assault between two soldiers happened about 1am. He said the alleged offender left the army base and a short time later a break-in was reported on a farming station.
"Some clothing had been taken. The area was cordoned off with the help of army personnel and at 9.25am a suspect was apprehended on State Highway Eight," Mr van der Heyden said.
He said no charges had been laid and the man was helping police with enquiries.
Newstalk ZB reported that the soldier was aged 17.
Ms Mortlock confirmed there had been an assault. She said the Army was working closely with police and the injured soldier was in a stable condition.
She said not all members of the man's family had been notified and she did not want to release any more information before they were informed.
