A soldier has been injured during a training exercise at Waiouru Army Camp when a ballpoint-pen-size detonator exploded in his hand.
The soldier, from Palmerston North's Linton Camp, had surgery to remove plastic fragments from his body after the weekend accident.
The unnamed man was taking part in an annual weapons training session, the Manawatu Standard reported.
The detonators would not be used again until the Army discovered what had happened, a Linton spokesman said.
