The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has succeeded in transmitting electricity across 55 metres of empty space using microwave technology.
The wireless transmission may one day stretch from gigantic solar panels in space, back to a power station back on earth. Unlike earth-based solar panels, satellite-based solar panels work 24 hours a day and aren't affected by weather conditions.
Researchers are aiming for 'practical use' in the 2030s.
