Strange lights seen hovering over Hokitika this week are likely to have been a natural and common phenomenon, not extraterrestrial activity. A number of people witnessed the "dancing" sky lights on Tuesday night.
On Facebook, Hokitika resident Candice Robinson said the lights appeared to be moving around in small circles, from side to side. They would shine bright then grow dull.
Marine search and rescue adviser Max Dowell said the description sounded like a solar flare.
