White Sox win tiebreaker
New Zealand went to a tiebreaker for the second time in two games but this time emerged victorious, 3-2 over Canada, to keep their women's softball Olympic medal hopes alive last night.
As with their hard-fought 2-3 loss to Australia the previous night, the scores were locked after the regulation seven innings. They remained at 2-2 after another two extra innings.
Melissa Upu scored the decisive run after starting automatically at second base in the 10th inning. She was advanced one by a Kim Dermott bunt and brought home by a Cindy Potae fly ball.
White Sox pitcher Gina Weber wrapped up the Canadian tiebreak inning and the New Zealanders embraced and high-fived in delight at beating the world No. 5-ranked team.
