The concession of a couple of soft runs cost Cross Country Rentals Giants dearly in their Inter City series men's softball match with Poneke-Kilbirnie on Saturday.
Poneke-Kilbirnie won 4-2. The scoreline would have been closer but for them being helped by errors in the field.
"We actually played pretty well but we let in a couple of runs which probably shouldn't have happened and that was the ball game," Giants pitcher Ritchie Clarke said.
Down 3-0 at one stage, Giants gave themselves hope of a come-from-behind victory when Ryan Shannahan hit a home run with his brother Nathan Shannahan on base, to close the margin between the two sides to just the one run.
But try as they might Giants could not get their noses in front and it was Poneke-Kilbirnie who managed the only other scoring action of the game.
Ryan Shannahan produced an outstanding all-round effort for Giants, hitting three safe hits in as many turns at bat. Nathan Shannahan was also showing good form with the bat and doing everything required of him in the field at second base.
