Wairarapa are the only unbeaten side in the regional super league netball competition after their enthralling 47-44 win over Kapiti-based KBJ at the Walter Nash Stadium in Taita on Sunday.
It was a victory which spoke volumes for the character and resolve of the Wairarapa team who overcame a dramatic lapse in the third quarter to take the honours.
That lapse, which saw a seven-goal halftime lead dwindle to a three-goal deficit, was mainly due to Wairarapa becoming frustrated, both with the niggly play of their opposition and referee rulings.
"It got pretty physical at times and we started to lose the plot," Wairarapa player-coach Kelly Sargent admitted. " A lot was going on which shouldn't have and we let it get to us."
Fortunately for Wairarapa, however, some positional changes for the fourth quarter worked the oracle.
Sargent moved herself from goal shoot to defence and brought on a new shooting combination in Abby Hull and Geraldine Carroll.
"It's always a risk making changes like that but we had to fight fire with fire and it seemed the best way to go," Sargent said. "We needed to get in their faces and give them something to think about."
And that's exactly what Wairarapa did with the result that it was KBJ who faltered and a three goal advantage became a three-goal loss.
"It was certainly character building for us,"Sargent said."It was the first time we've had to come from behind to win and it was great to pull it off."
While delighted with the input of all her players in this latest victory Sargent had a special mention for young St Matthews Collegiate player Ashleigh Somerville, who had her first start at goal shoot.
"She (Somerville) was put under a lot of pressure and I thought she coped really well,"Sargent said. "She showed she's got the right temperament for this level of the game."
Wairarapa's will play their last home game of the season when they host Hutt Valley 2 at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton on Friday night.
Sargent considers Hutt Valley 2 to be her team's main rival for the super league title and she is hopeful of a large and vocal crowd being on hand to boost the chances of the Wairarapa side.
"It does help having the crowd behind you so the more people that come along the better for us,' she said. "If we can win this one we can win the league?.that's how important it is."
So much for Kapiti, roll on Hutt Valley
