The NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden should testify to the New Zealand intelligence committee on the influence the US spy agency has over its local partner, says Green Party co-leader Russel Norman.
He has written to other members of the committee, including Prime Minister John Key, to request Mr Snowden be invited to speak about the US National Security Agency's involvement with the Government Communications Security Bureau.
The request follows testimony by Mr Snowden to the European Union that the NSA has helped find or create loopholes in New Zealand law to enable widespread spying.
Dr Norman's letter raised Mr Snowden's evidence to the European Parliament, given by video conference from Russia.
Labour leader David Cunliffe, who is on the committee, said he had no objection to hearing from Mr Snowden if there was information which was relevant to its work. Mr Key, who rejected Mr Snowden's claims, refused to respond on the proposed invitation.
