A snowboarder is in Christchurch Hospital with serious head injuries after an accident at Mt Hutt today.
A press release sent out from a spokeswoman for the Canterbury skifield this evening said: "The young Christchurch man was snowboarding off trail with his father and brothers when he stopped at the top of a high bank above the access road to Mt Hutt's top car park."
"He lost his balance and toppled down over the bank and landed on the access road about 3 to 4 metres below."
The man suffered head injuries and was treated on the mountain before being transferred to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter. He is now in a serious but stable condition.
Three people have died at Mt Hutt this season after no deaths on the mountain for five years. Yesterday, the mountain was evacuated after an avalanche but no one was hurt.
