Snow is expected to fall in the South Island today as summer continues to be little more than a dream in many parts of the country.
Up to 10cm of snow is expected at the summit of Porters Pass this morning, according to a Met Service weather warning.
The risk of snow has now eased on the Milford Road and Lindis Pass, forecasters said.
Snow is expected to fall down to 900 metres in Canterbury this morning and the Kaikoura ranges this evening.
Thunderstorms and hail are also possible as the southerly moves north. It is expected to arrive in Wellington this afternoon.
Heavy rain has also accompanied the latest summer southerly, with nearly 80mm falling overnight in mid Canterbury, causing flooding in Ashburton.
