Motorists are being warned of snow falling in parts of Central Otago and the road to the Milford Sound.
MetService is warning that snow could fall in areas as low as 200m above sea level.
The Milford Sounds Highway and roads around the Homer tunnel in Fiordland could get a sprinkling of sleet and snow.
MetService is forecasting 2 - 3cms of snow which could cause problems for drivers.
MetService forecaster Ian Miller also predicted more heavy snowfalls in the Southland and South Otago.
Mr Miller said snow down to 200 metres, hail and heavy thunderstorms would lash the region through to the early hours of Saturday morning.
He said 15cm of snow could settle above 400m in the Catlins and the Hokonui Hills.
He advised farmers to shelter vulnerable stock as blizzard-like conditions could hit the high grounds at times.
Motorists were also urged to take special care.
