A new road snowfall warning has been issued for the Desert Road, with 1-2cm of snow expected above 900m.
Showers are predicted to turn to snow this afternoon on the main route through the North Island.
MetService has also issued a new heavy rain warning for Hawkes Bay.
A further 20-30mm of rain is expected before noon today, with peak intensities of 10-15mm per hour.
Severe weather warnings have now been lifted for the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.
