The icy southerly sweeping up the North Island has brought drops of snow on the hills around Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.
WeatherWatch.co.nz has received reports of snow falling on paddocks on the Mamaku Ranges near Rotorua and on Mount Pirongia near Te Awamutu.
It's not just plummeting temperatures making the weather miserable.
WeatherWatch says gales are gusting to almost 110 kilometres an hour at East Cape - and gale force southerlies are gusting to over 90 kilometres at Manukau Heads.
The MetService says temperatures should be back to normal tomorrow after today's cold snap.
Most centres have experienced single digit temperatures, except Milford Sound which has today's high of 17 degrees.
The forecast for the rest of the week is milder, but with more rain on the way.
