Conservationists will take the Government to court today to challenge its decision to allow endangered West Coast snails to be shifted to make way for coal mining.
The Minister of Conservation, Chris Carter, and Associate Energy Minister Harry Duynhoven approved a permit to allow the Powelliphanta augustus to be shifted so that state-owned Solid Energy could mine about $400 million worth of high-quality coal. About 1300 snails have been moved.
The Save Happy Valley Coalition will seek a judicial review of the decision in the High Court at Wellington today at 10am.
