The first #smoothiesinschools event will be taking place at Mangere East Primary School next week, seeking to educate children about what benefits smoothies can have for the body and how they can make a person feel.
Organic Mechanic will be collaborating with Ceres Organics to make 300 smoothies for the students at the school during their visit. They say the free, healthy, organic smoothie will energize the kids and help them to focus better in class. OM will be visiting the school, while Ceres will be providing the produce.
The event is the first in an ongoing programme, in which every few months another school will be chosen to receive the smoothies, based on an audience vote on social media. The groups hope that they will be able to share nutritious green smoothies with hundreds of children in decile one schools throughout Auckland.
Organic Mechanic sees giving back to the community as a key aspect of its business model, and seeks to educate, inspire and invigorate the young leaders of the future from its position as a social enterprise.
OM will also be bringing their raw living probiotic kombucha to the school. Co-founder Graedon Parker says this is "a fermented probiotic tea which is really good for restoring gut bacteria, boosting immunity and uplifting mood."
