About 200 pupils from Fernridge School were evacuated from their classes after a classroom became smoke-logged yesterday morning.
Masterton fire service station officer Doug Flowerday said a piece of firewood had been left on top of a logburner in one of the classrooms, triggering the smoke alarms and leading to the evacuation about 11.30am yesterday.
He said firefighters removed the piece of smouldering wood that had caused "quite a lot of smoke" in the room, which they ventilated.
About 200 pupils had been involved in the brief evacuation from the school, which has two heat pumps and six logburners for heating.
