Richie McCaw was named the rugby player of the year last night as it was revealed his biography could be the best-selling rugby book of all time.
The All Black captain had plenty of reasons to smile as he celebrated at the Steinlager Rugby Awards at SkyCity in Auckland.
His book, The Open Side, has sold 120,000 copies worldwide since going on sale in October, surpassing the New Zealand record for Sir Colin Meads' 1974 title, Colin Meads All Black, which sold 55,000 copies.
And 20,000 of McCaw's books have been sold in the UK - a phenomenal result for that market because traditionally rugby books do not sell well there, said Kevin Chapman, head of publisher Hachette.
The involvement of Greg McGee, an award-winning novelist, elevated it above the ordinary run-of-the-mill sports offering, Mr Chapman said.
