Crowds at the CRC Speedshow got a spectacular but safe demonstration of the power of a head-on crash at 60km/h when cars were dropped from a crane yesterday.
Auckland Transport set up the event to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding. Two cars were dropped from 14m on to concrete at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.
Every year, speed is a contributing factor in more than 100 fatal crashes, Auckland Transport community transport manager Matthew Rednall said.
"No matter what causes a crash, vehicle speed directly affects the force of impact."
The simulation also demonstrated how vehicle safety can minimise the occurrence and consequences of car accidents.
