A small shark has washed up on the beach in Mt Maunganui.
A woman from the Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club, who did not want to be identified, said one of their lifeguards came across the baby shark overnight, just north of the club.
"It was a small, less than-a-metre-shark, a baby. It had been caught on a kontiki [fishing line] and the people had put it back in the sea but it washed back up again. It didn't even have any teeth."
The woman said the shark was gone by early morning.
A Tauranga City Council spokesman said park rangers would be looking into the washed-up shark tomorrow.
