The lower North Island rumbled to a 4.2-magnitude earthquake early this afternoon.
The quake, centred 40km southwest of Wellington and 30km underground, was felt in Wellington, Porirua and Lower Hutt at 1.26pm, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said in a statement.
