KEY POINTS:
Only a small crowd of around 50 people turned up today to a march against crime in North Shore City.
The Takapuna demonstration was in response to the kidnapping of Chinese five-year-old Cina Ma. Most of those who showed up were Asian, and carrying Asian Anti-Crime Group banners.
The organiser of the march said he was "disappointed" by the turnout.
However, Max Whitehead is not blaming a lack of concern about crime: he is blaming the local newspaper.
He said the local paper refused to print anything promoting the march, so North Shore residents did not know about it.
Mr Whitehead believes more people would have turned out if they were aware it was happening, but he also thinks there may have been an element of apathy.
Police said organisers did not have a permit for the march, but there was no need to intervene, because there was no risk of traffic disruption or civil disobedience.
