Toyota's Yaris has been trounced in the sales stakes this year, with the Suzuki Swift outselling it. Even Hyundai's Getz and Honda's Jazz sold in greater numbers than the Toyota to the end of May.
That is despite the fact the sharply styled Jazz - which also lacks stability control - actually costs over $2000 more. Perhaps buyers are willing to overlook the higher price for the roomier cabin and bigger boot.
Yaris buyers may prefer the Toyota's curvy style, but Getz is a good buy. The 1.6-litre engine offers similar power, and has stability control among its features, for $24,990.
Suzuki's 1.5-litre auto Swift is cheaper still at $23,990. It has less power than the Yaris but has stability control.
Ford's Fiesta may not sell as well as these cars, but if you insist on the auto you're paying $3000 less for just a small power deficit - and a longer features list that includes ESP.
