Small boat reels in big fish

Police in Kaitaia want to speak to the skipper of a boat involved in an attempt to catch a marlin from a dinghy.

A launch had been fishing off Ahipara, 14km southwest of Kaitaia, about 2pm on Friday when it made a double strike of marlin.

Police said one man was put in a 2m dinghy to chase one of the fish, while the launch set off after the other one.

After a search alert, another launch found the dinghy about 7pm and rescued the man - and the marlin, which he had managed to catch.
