BRATISLAVA - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic has appointed leftist Robert Fico as the country's new prime minister, despite a wave of criticism over his coalition cabinet, which includes far-right nationalists.
Fico, a 41-year-old human rights lawyer, takes over from centre-right reformist Mikulas Dzurinda.
Fico's leftist Smer party won a June 17 election but not a majority.
He has formed a coalition with the centre-left HZDS party of former Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar and the nationalists.
