KEY POINTS:
A slip has come down onto the Parnell Baths carpark and cracks have opened up along the cliff face of Resolution Point.
The Auckland City Council has closed public access to the baths area and a public walkway to Point Resolution.
A geotech report by engineering consultants is set to be finished in about a month's time and, depending on its outcome, further public access in the area could be restricted.
The council's parks and services manager Mark Bowater said the cracks in the cliff face were on the eastern side of the headland and were not threatening any buildings.
"We've taken all reasonable precautions at this stage, until we get further geotechnical information, that might determine whether we should take any more steps," Mr Bowater said.
He said the cliff face could require work and the Resolution Point reserve could be closed if the geotech report came back with bad news but it was too early to speculate.
Mr Bowater said the council had also given Ontrack a "heads up" of the potential risk in the area.
Auckland's eastern railway line runs between the cliff and Tamaki Drive but is not affected by the threat of the slip, said Ontrack spokesman Kevin Ramshaw.
Mr Ramshaw said engineers had assessed the area and are confident that there is no risk of a slip endangering the railway line.
He said engineers would continue to monitor the area.
Last week 80 cubic metres of soil was being held back by retaining fences.
The popular baths are closed at this time of year but before the slip were due to open on November 1.
