KEY POINTS:
A large slip has closed the Manawatu Gorge.
Police team leader Stacey Robinson said the road could be closed for up to eight hours.
She said the alternative routes were State Highway Two, Rimutaka Hill, to Wellington or the Pahiatua Track to Palmerston North.
Ms Robinson advised motorists to drive with care and be aware that there could be delays.
