A "significant" slip has closed the road between Queenstown and Glenorchy this morning.
The 200 tonne slip came down in an area known as the Narrows on the Glenorchy side of Bobs Cove, 16km west of Queenstown, about 9am, Queenstown Lakes District Council infrastructure services general manager Mark Kunath said.
"We will get in there with a helicopter in the next few hours to have the slip assessed by geotechnical experts. That will give us a clear idea of what we are dealing with," he said.
Diggers were on hand to start the clean up once the slip was stable but the road was likely to be closed for 24 hours.
Mr Kunath said the council was investigating alternative transport for Glenorchy residents.
