Red Star also found runs hard to come by in their first innings. They got off to the worst possible start by losing their first wicket before a run had been scored and after a minor recovery which saw them 77-3 they then lost three wickets on that scoreline, including Robbie Anderson whose breezy 41 came from 50 balls and included seven fours and one six. There was some high-risk shot making in his knock but that was understandable considering the tricky batting conditions. Nicolai Karaitiana (29 from 73 balls including four fours) and Jared Watt (10) then saw Red Star safely past the Greytown total-vital because the Bidwill Cup can be won on the first innings- but at 118-9 their advantage seemed likely to be a slim one. However, Karaitiana and Aaron Wilson (9 not out) added a very valuable 26 runs for the last wicket and they were all out for 144, a first innings lead of 59.
Bowling for Greytown Steve Coleman mixed his deliveries up cleverly in taking 5-30 from 18 overs and Brian James was good value in finishing with 3-35 from 14 overs.
Greytown's second innings started much as their first, with the first wicket falling early and they were 9-1 at the close of play.
