KEY POINTS:
A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, especially when his wife tells him.
That's how Geovine da Silva came to be sitting out overnight at the Queen St store of Michael Hill Jewellers, the first in line to pick up a diamond ring for just $1.
His wife, Evelin, wanted her first diamond ring, so Mr da Silva agreed to line up for the special deal, part of a larger 50 per cent discount sale on selected items.
Mr da Silva began his vigil at 7am yesterday and, all going to plan, should be walking out with the ring, valued at $1000, by 9 this morning.
The store is offering just five of the $1 diamond rings.
Others in the line-up last night included Sam Holden, a 22-year-old Auckland University law student, who is hoping to get one for his girlfriend's birthday next week.
Mr Holden said he and the four others had come to an agreement over who would get which of the rings valued at between $500 and $1000.
A couple of other hopefuls had turned up but decided against camping overnight, given the limited number of rings available.
Mr Holden said he had heard that some keen ring buyers had started queuing at other stores from as early as Monday night.
